It’s that time of year again! The holidays are in full swing, people are starting to think about their New Year’s resolutions and the world’s color authority, Pantone, has released its 2019 color of the year – Living Coral!
According to Pantone’s website, Living Coral “embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.” The color authority notes that people are seeking connection and intimacy due to the “onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life.” Pantone says this color can evoke warm feelings with its lightheartedness.
Living Coral is a bold, vibrant color that makes a big statement. It may seem like it would be overwhelming if incorporated in your home, but that’s not necessarily true.
We talked with designers and style experts from across the country to get their tips on how you could use Living Coral in your home.
Paint It

Living Coral is not for the faint of heart – this color makes a statement!
An easy way to incorporate this shade into your home (and add that punch of energy) is by painting the walls.
“Use Living Coral as an accent wall in a living or dining room. It will add that pop of color that draws the eye, yet doesn’t overpower the rest of the room,” according to John and Belinda Wiesehan, owners of Rock Hill 360 Painting in North Carolina. “It also makes a great color for a powder room, where there aren’t as many rules. Or in a child’s bedroom, which is almost expected to be bright, fun and loud.”
If you’re not ready to commit to painting the walls, Erika Woelfel, a color expert at Behr Paints, suggests using Behr’s decorative chalk paint in Salmon Coral on a piece of furniture like an end table or dresser. “It’s also a great accent color for a welcoming front door or piece of exterior furniture,” says Woelfel.
Bring the Outdoors In

Since Living Coral is inspired by the bold coral found along reefs, why not bring this naturally occurring color inside? This shade is naturally found in many flowers like peonies, dahlias, roses and more!
Bring in this color naturally with a vase of fresh-cut flowers, a brass floral hoop or even a painting of some bright-coral blooms.
Less is More

You don’t have to go big in order to incorporate Living Coral into your home. Small touches can still brighten and energize any room. They’ll also be easier to design around throughout the year.
Wolefel suggests using this color on small furniture pieces like coffee tables, bookshelves and flower pots.
Even a piece of art with Living Coral can make a space feel more inviting. Sandra Chandler, trend expert and lead buyer at Art.com, says, “Hang a picture inspired by this hue where you’ll see it often – the kitchen, bathroom or entryway are great options – to channel its warmth when you need it.”
Mix it Up

Living Coral is a striking color, but that doesn’t mean it can’t mix and match with other shades. On the contrary, Woelfel says this tone plays well with a variety of shades.
“The coral tone pairs beautifully with acidic yellow and fresh green if you’re going for an energetic color combination. Navy blue and shades of warm, velvety taupe lend coral a sophisticated look. Don’t limit yourself with this color. Get creative, have fun and make it personal — after all, it’s your space,” says Woelfel.
Woelfel says she personally prefers Living Coral paired with turquoise because it creates a sunny, tropical vibe.
If pairing Living Coral with other bright colors is a bit too bold for you, the Wiesehans have another idea for you. “A light or medium shade of grey would pair best with this bright, fun color,” they say.
They also point out that Living Coral would work best in homes that are modern and light. If your home is more rustic or classic, finding colorful pieces that fit may take a little more time.
Spice up the Kitchen

For the last few years, white kitchens have reigned supreme. You could get away with darker colors as long as they were still neutral and modern. Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets, implies that might be changing.
“Living Coral’s relevance in home interiors, particularly kitchens, is something that breathes life into the space. Dare I say, it could even be a gateway back into red kitchens,” says Pierce.
“We have started to see a rise of personal color preferences making their way back into cabinetry as accent areas, small appliances and décor. This (Living Coral) is a very useable color tone, especially as we will likely see variations of this shade with even more intensity or something in a paler range.”
Get the Look
