Anyone who knows me knows that Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love dressing up, stocking up on trick-or-treat goodies and decorating my home. In fact, I’ve pretty much bypassed traditional fall decorations and jumped right into cobwebs, skeletons and jack-o’-lanterns.
If you’re a Halloween fan like me, you might have also started planning what costume you’re going to wear this year. In fact, The National Retail Federation (NRF) predicts a record high spending and participation in 2018 Halloween decorations, candy and costumes, so we’re not alone!
With most Americans already prepping for All Hallows’ Eve, let’s discuss what costumes will be trending this year for kids, adults and even pets.
For Kids and Teens
According to NRF, princesses and superheroes are the top choices in kids Halloween costumes. No surprise there – kids, both young and old, love to dress up as their personal heroes, whether that’s the heroine in a Disney movie or battle-ready Marvel movie character.
Superheroes
With the growing popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, superheroes are the top Halloween costume choice for kids and adults. On the forefront are the characters from the “Avengers” series. More specifically, the characters from the movie “Black Panther” are very popular this year.
- Kids Black Panther costume – $35
- Kids Shuri costume – $40
Next in line are the characters from the new “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”

Disney Princesses
Apparently, the only thing that won’t “Let it Go” is the popularity of Disney’s “Frozen” character costumes. Once again, there’s still a desire in kids to dress up like Anna and Elsa. However, a few other Disney heroines are also added to this year’s list, like Vanellope von Schweetz from the sequel “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”
- Kids Anna costume – $40
- Kids Elsa costume – $40
- Kids Vanellope costume – $60
“Star Wars” Characters
Continuing in popularity from 2017 are the characters from the Star Wars franchise. Perhaps this is due to the fact that “Episode VIII: The Last Jedi” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story” came out recently. These costumes are unique because both the young and old can appreciate the classic and new characters. Here are a few new faces since last year.
- Kids Han Solo costume – $35
- Kids Lando Calrissian costume – $50
- Kids Chewbacca costume – $45
“Riverdale”
From the comic book to the big screen, the reboot of the beloved “Riverdale” characters has captured the new generation. Whether you’re a Betty, Veronica, Jughead or Archie, these costumes are what preteens and some young adults are wearing this Halloween.
- Riverdale Varsity Jacket – $50
- Southside Serpents Jacket – $80
- Archie Cheerleader Costume – $50
Fortnite
The game that has swept the attention of kids everywhere is coming to life in the form of 2018 Halloween costumes. For someone who doesn’t play, I found this selection to be quite confusing, but maybe your kid/preteen will get it?
- Kids Brite Bomber costume – $50
- Crackshot costume – $60
- Dark Voyager costume – $210
For Adults
Traditional Halloween costumes, such as witches, vampires, pirates or clowns are still pretty popular in adult costume choices, according to NRF. However, this year’s adult Halloween costumes have drawn inspiration from movies, TV shows, pop culture and even newsworthy events.
“Captain Marvel”
Superheroes aren’t just for kids. With the announcement of the newest Marvel movie, “Captain Marvel,” to premiere in 2019, fans of the Marvel universe are excited to welcome the newest character, Captain Marvel.
Adult Captain Marvel costume – $70
Michael Myers
The “Halloween” series is getting a revival set in modern times. What better way to bring back the classic series than with this horrifying, realistic Michael Myers costume?

“The Handmaid’s Tale
“The Handmaid’s Tale” has continued to grow in popularity this year, bringing with it an interest in dressing up as a handmaid on Halloween. Let’s be honest, what’s scarier than a dystopic future where everyone’s rights are taken away?

T. Rex
For those with a little sense of humor, the T. rex costumes are still popular in 2018, guaranteed to get a laugh at any party or gathering.

Zombie
With the continuation of the “Walking Dead” television series, fans are still obsessed with the undead. If you’re looking to give your friends a fright, consider dressing up as a “walker,” (as they are referred to on the show) and give your best groaning impression of a zombie.
- Adult Charred Walker mask – $70
- Adult Deer Walker mask – $70
- Adult Negan’s Bat – $22
Don’t Forget Fido
According to NRF, pet costumes have also increased in popularity with 20% of pet owners planning on dressing their pets this Halloween. The trend is highest for millennials (aged 25 – 34). And while dog owners are more likely to dress up their pets, cat owners are also up there as well.
- Pet Superman costume – $22
- Pet Hot Dog costume – $22
- Pet Nyan Cat costume – $29
- Pet Pancake Cat costume – $22
- Pet Shark costume – $20
This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the things you could be this Halloween. The best part is picking a costume you’ll have fun wearing for that one day, so make the most of it! And if you can’t find something you like in stores, you can make one at home!
